Let them eat wedding cake

Posted in unusual weddings, wedding ireland, wedding planning at 4:26 pm by admin

A Tipperary couple is definitely keeping wedding guests sweet this week, as they have requested a giant 30-tier wedding cake for their big day.

The cake, created by Rachel Healy of Healy Celebration Cakes in Blackpool, Cork city, includes 1,440 eggs, 77kgs of icing, 32kgs of flour and 250 sugar and silk roses.

According to the Irish Independent, Healy and two of her employees have worked full time on the cake for the last three or four weeks.

Creating the stands took four days, the edible flowers took another week and figuring out the practicalities of creating such a complicated cake passed countless days.

“It is a memorable one. We normally make six wedding cakes a week — 10 if we are lucky. But this was something else. We killed ourselves making it. We often worked from six in the morning until 10 in the evening. But it was fine because we knew we would get there eventually. The couple were delighted and that is the main thing,” said Healy, who admitted being worried about the logistics of this special request.

“It was a lot of organisation because I thought it was going to hit off the ceiling. But we got there and I am finally deflating after weeks of stress.”

Healy didn’t want to reveal the value of the cake but with a regular three-tier wedding cake averaging €300/€400 we just need to do the maths…

Wedding on ice for China’s Olympic medalists

Posted in unusual weddings, www.theweddingplanner.ie at 11:21 am by admin

It doesn’t get much cooler than having your wedding on the ice rink. Chinese figure skaters and gold medalists at the Vancouver Winter Olympics, Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo have decided to celebrate their wedding (the couple married in 2007) at a public ice skating show in Beijing this September.

Xue and Honbo fell in love on the ice and are now retiring from professional ice skating after 18 years of professional partnership to start a family. While they married in 2007 they never got a chance to have a wedding party.

“Xue and I have always wanted to marry on the ice. It’s her dream and now we have an opportunity,” Zhao said to media.

Some of the biggest international stars on ice skating will also perform at the wedding/farewell of China’s ‘golden couple’.

Part of the funds raised will be donated to skating training programmes.

Happy Surprise Wedding!

When the 180 guests shouted ‘surprise!’, Jamie Crook was convinced it was just a surprise party for his 30th birthday organised by his girlfriend Gemma. What he didn’t know was this would be also his wedding day.

According to The Mirror newspaper, long-term girlfriend Gemma had planned the surprise wedding in secret and proposed on the spot, in front of the wedding/birthday party guests. After the speechless boyfriend said yes (who wouldn’t?), he had 10 minutes to go and get ready for his wedding day.

The wedding planning must have been a bit of a nightmare for the bride-to-be, who had to keep it all a secret from her uninformed groom AND make sure none of the family or friends gave it away!

Elvis’ Hawaiian Wedding … in Wales

Elvis Hawaiian Wedding

Elvis Hawaiian Wedding

A couple of Elvis fans renewed their wedding vows in a Blue Hawaii-inspired beach ceremony in Porthcawl, South Wales!

In front of a mixed crowed of holidaymakers, Elvis lookalikes and guests in Hawaiian outfits, Steve and Barbara Caprice renewed their wedding vows, after 15 years of marriage. The bride wore a dress based on Priscilla Presley’s bridal gown and the couple re-enacted the wedding scene from Blue Hawaiim – one of Elvis Presley’s movies.

They chose the seaside town of Porthcawl as the Elvis-Beach wedding venue, since it hosts a Elvis Presley festival every year. Mr Caprice, who is an Elvis impersonator himself, said it was like a ‘dream come true’.

Get ready people, we might soon see a tide of Elvises and Priscillas lining up to tie the knot in Courtown Harbour. Could this pick up as an idea for a Beach Wedding in Ireland?

Rent a crowd for your wedding!

Posted in funny wedding stuff, unusual weddings, wedding, wedding ireland, www.theweddingplanner.ie, www.weddingplanner.ie at 3:08 pm by admin

Most couples tend to worry about trimming down a huge wedding guest list to a decent (and affordable) smaller amount of invites. However, this doesn’t seem to be the case in Japan, where a Tokyo-based company has launched a service where couples lacking enough friends and family can rent them for the wedding day.

The ‘fake’ family members, colleagues and friends don’t come cheap: the price is 20,000 yen (approximately €150) per head.

For extra 5,000 yen, the guest will perform a song or a dance. If you would you’re your rental friend to make a speech that will cost you another 10,000 yen.

As reported by Reuters, many Japanese see weddings as a formal event that must be attended by as many family members, friends and co-workers as possible.

According to the company representative, work-related requests are rising, due to the current recession, and many clients ask for a fake boss and fake colleagues to attend their wedding day.

What the company hasn’t disclosed is if rental grooms or brides are also on offer…
