Tips for a vegetarian-friendly wedding menu
When it comes to wedding menus, vegetarian guests can usually feel they are missing out, but going for the vegetarian option shouldn’t leave you hungry or disappointed.
The Wedding Planner has compiled some useful tips for a tasty vegetarian wedding menu that could satisfy any palate…
1-When creating a vegetarian-only wedding menu or choosing the vegetarian option for your wedding guests think about dishes that would appeal to non-vegetarian guests also.
2-If you are having a vegetarian-only menu, opt for a varied range of styles: don’t overdo the exotic spicy dishes, combining ethnic food with veggie versions of more ‘traditional’ dishes that will please all tastes and ages.
3-Eastern inspiration.
Indian cuisine is rich in vegetarian dishes, as well as having a wide range of recipes that can be cooked with or without meat and/or fish. Thai cuisine and Chinese also have great vegetarian options, such as vegetable curries and stir fry dishes.
4-All time favourites.
Consider including vegetarian versions of popular favourites such as lasagna and cannelloni (spinach and ricotta is a far superior option to the meat cannelloni anyway).
Other traditional recipes such as pastry pies and cottage pies can also easily become veggie dishes. Stuffed peppers (and other vegetables) are another tasty example of great dishes that can become meat-free without compromising in flavour.
5-Something fishy?
Bear in mind some veggies do eat fish and seafood. If your wedding menu is vegetarian-only, include some dishes with fish and/or seafood. Seafood paella is a good option.
6-Say cheese.
Baked brie, Camembert with cranberry, fondue… cheese is usually a vegetarian’s best friend. Fortunately there is a huge selection of dishes (old and new) with cheese as their main ingredient.
7-Soups and starters.
The range of vegetarian (and also vegan) soups and starters is great. Just make sure there is no meat-based stock used in any of them (if you are hiring a caterer or hotel). Go for cold soups for the summer (gazpacho or mint and pea soup) and warm for Autumn and Winter (tomato and roasted red pepper). Starters such as bruschetta, veggie samosas and avocado salad are bound to please not just the veggie guests, but all guests alike.
8-Remember to include some vegan options in your menu (no eggs and no dairy products allowed).
